What is this blog about?
In this week’s blog, we review two positive announcements from RICS.
One relates to a further amendment to RICS concession professional fee rates in 2025, whilst the other relates to a return to printed editions of Modus by RICS magazine.
What has changed in relation to concession fees?
We wrote about the changes to RICS professional fees in 2025 in a previous blog article.
The key omission from the new concession categories was the part-time working concession, which previously had a 50% rate applied to professional fees. This supported a variety of professionals who are unable or have chosen to work part-time, including women returning to work after maternity leave and all professionals taking on childcare responsibilities that require part-time work.
RICS previously considered that the not practising 50% concession is adequate, but the industry felt that this unfairly penalised women returning to work, in particular.
Women in Surveying conducted a poll via LinkedIn, showing that out of 686 votes, 97% of respondents consider that RICS should reconsider its changes to membership concessions.
RICS responded by consulting with their Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) forum, network leaders, regional board leads, RICS Board, Governing Council, Presidential Team and over 700 member opinions through an online survey.
This led to Governing Council announcing a revised concessions framework for 2025:
Category | Unable to work | Working part time |
Family raising | 90% | 50% |
Caring responsibilities | 90% | 50% |
Retirement | 90% | 50% |
Ill health, incapacity or disability | 90% | 50% |
RICS will consider exceptional circumstances outside of the above framework on a case by case basis. Contact details are on the RICS website if you fall into this category.
RICS has also amended the definition of the non-practising concession, with the aim of supporting members who want to retain their letters whilst working outside of the surveying profession.
Finally, in Q1 2026 RICS will be making further changes to professional fees with a view to further refining a long-term concession framework.
What has changed in relation to the Modus by RICS magazine?
The RICS Modus magazine (and four RICS Journals) used to be printed and distributed to members by post. However, following consultation by RICS (you can read the full details here), this stopped in August 2020 and the printed copy became accessible only online.
However, repeated calls from members have led to RICS re-introducing a biannual printed copy of Modus by RICS. The first edition will be distributed to UK members in January 2025, and will include elements from Modus, the four RICS Journals (you can read the full online copies here) and other content published by RICS. If you are based outside of the UK, then a PDF copy only will be available online.
Tina Paillet, RICS President confirmed that;
‘Members have told us that they want to see the return of our ‘Modus’ and ‘Journals’ publications in a print format. We have carefully considered their feedback and taken the opportunity to consider a new and refreshed approach. ‘Modus by RICS’ brings together the best of both titles, and more besides. During the latest ‘Shaping the Future’ member engagement events we shared potential layouts and mock ups of the new format magazine, to ensure it delivers maximum value for members. Feedback from these sessions has informed its curation and production, helping us to deliver on exactly what members asked of us’.
However, it’s not just as easy as waiting for Modus by RICS to drop through your letterbox…all members (and APC candidates) need to opt in to receive the magazine via their online RICS account. Don’t miss out!
