What is this blog about?

In this week's blog, we look at the importance of reading good quality market press and how this can make you a better Chartered Surveyor.

This article was originally written for EG following the announcement by the previous owning group that the magazine would no longer be printed.

However, since then Mark Allen Group announced that it has bought out the magazine, which will be re-introduced as Estates Gazette.

We are hoping that our APC Series will continue to be printed in the new Estates Gazette, so keep your eyes peeled!

Why is the Estates Gazette so special to the property industry?

EG has been so important to many generations of students and aspiring property professionals.

For me, the Estates Gazette has always been a weekly delight to read. I remember my first few weeks as a trainee surveyor with Seagrove & Lambert Surveyors in Bristol, eagerly picking up the printed magazine each week and trying to learn as much as possible from those sacred pages!

The magazine has stayed with me over the last 17 years, providing opportunities to write this fantastic APC Series column, co-author articles alongside my good colleague Paul Collins (of Mainly for Students and Nottingham Trent University) and read about the fantastic, diverse and dynamic property industry.

Although the print edition no longer arrives on my desk each week, as soon as the online copy drops into my inbox I open it up with a cup of coffee and enjoy all the news and insights that EG has to offer.

One of the most memorable stories about the Estates Gazette was told to me by my dad, Don Lemen – a retired Chartered Surveyor (FRICS).

As a young boy growing up in the 1960s, his dad, my grandfather, George Lemen, was the Estates Director at H.Samuel, the jewellers. On a Saturday morning, they would go into the postroom at H Samuel's head office. As the office was closed at the weekend, security always had to open it up for them. They would sort out the daily post into the respective pigeonholes for each team – the draw and excitement of his post and a new copy of the Estates Gazette was too much to resist before Monday morning!

My grandfather would read Estates Gazette from cover to cover at the weekend. In those days it came rolled up in paper like a large sausage and my dad remembers opening it up and flattening it to read. There was no internet and this was one important way to keep up to date with the property market.

My dad has fond memories of those days and the Estates Gazette gave him a grounding into the world of property as a young boy - he was very sad to hear about the demise of EG, as are so many other property professionals.

it's unexpected to learn that EG will be closing its doors after many years of operation. EG provided me with a valuable platform to share my experiences and inspire others to pursue their goal of becoming Chartered Surveyors. Through EG, I was able to discuss my journey, from becoming an AssocRICS to navigating the RICS APC preliminary route and ultimately achieving Chartered Surveyor status’.

Luckily for all of us, Estates Gazette will continue in print going forward, under new ownership.

APC Series in EG

Over the last 5 or so years that I have been involved as an author for EG, I have written for the APC Series and Mainly for Students columns, as well as the Starting Out in Real Estate supplement. This has included a diverse range of topics, spanning various asset classes (residential, industrial, office and retail property, as well as leisure and other alternative asset classes) and APC competencies.

Hopefully, these have appealed to a wide range of property and construction professionals, from being mildly interested in property as a year 1 student to being a seasoned property expert!

Starting Out in Real Estate Supplement

The Starting Out in Real Estate Supplement has been a seminal publication by EG, incorporating so much fantastic advice from so many experienced property professionals.

It does not just aim to educate RICS-accredited course students, it provides insights into the property world for anyone.

It answers key questions such as:

·       What is a surveyor?

·       Can I become a surveyor?

·       What qualifications or experience do I need to become a surveyor?

·       Is real estate an inclusive and diverse professional?

·       What can I do in the world of real estate?

·       I don’t know anyone in the property industry, how do I get involved?

·       How can I find my first job in property?

·       How can I develop my career in property?

·       What the benefits of a career in the property industry?

·       And so much more…

Where can I find EG resources?

You can read our archive EG APC Series Articles by searching in our website blog. We also hope that these will remain available on the Estates Gazette website and digital archives.

You will find the printed archives of Mainly for Students in most university libraries (I remember checking copies out at UWE when I was a student!).

Why is being market aware so important to RICS APC candidates and Chartered Surveyors?

It seems very appropriate to link to an archived EG APC Series Article here, about Knowing Your Market.
